Playable? Chapter 14, Verdant Wind

A mysterious professor invited by Rhea to teach at Garreg Mach Monastery. He is said to come from a distant land across the ocean, something corroborated by his unique appearance and style of dress. Rhea refers to him as an old friend, and trusts him enough to teach Lance and Reason in the Monastery. He is respected by the students for his patience and honesty. Many have become curious about his past, but he rarely speaks about himself or his homeland. He is also fond of gardening.

In truth, Zhongli is not his real name, but a pseudonym chosen for his journey to Fodlan. His real name is Morax, and he traveled from the dragon homeland to keep an eye on Rhea at the behest of his elders. Believing him to be sympathetic to her cause and desire to resurrect her mother, Rhea welcomed him into the Monastery. He plays his part of a mentor figure to the students, all the while earning Rhea's trust to judge if she was still of sound mind.

In the Crimson Flower route, he will protect Rhea during Chapter 12 as an enemy unit in his unique class, Geomancer. He will retreat once defeated, and will not appear for the remainder of the route until Chapter 18, where he asks Edelgard if she is intent on ending Rhea. Edelgard answers in the affirmative, and Zhongli tells her he will depart Fodlan permanently along with his kin (i.e. the remaining dragons), saying that this country no longer had a need for people like him.

In the Azure Moon and Silver Snow routes, he appears in a cutscene visiting Rhea in captivity and speaks with her about their nature as dragonkind, concluding that karma has punished her sufficiently for her deeds. He is presumed to have returned to the dragon homeland and is not mentioned again.

In the Verdant Wind route, he joins Byleth and the Golden Deer in their mission, first to stand against the empire and then to root out Those Who Slither In The Dark. He plays the role of mentor and a teacher stand-in for the students, revealing his true draconic form to assist them in their battle against Nemesis and the Ten Elites. After the war concludes, he remains in Fodlan to assist Claude and Byleth's rule for many years to come.

Gameplay
Zhongli is only playable on the Verdant Wind route, and will join Byleth at the start of Chapter 14: The Alliance Leader's Ambitions. He has a unique personal class, Geomancer, which is proficient in Lances and Reason magic; and a personal skill, Wind and Water, which negates all terrain penalties. That is, his movement range is not reduced by sand, forest, and he can also occupy tiles only navigable by Flying units. He possesses a unique unnamed crest, which occasionally prevents enemy counterattacks. He has a high starting level and serviceable stats, but he also has naturally low growth rates and his efficiency is surpassed by student units in the latter chapters.

However, he will automatically reclass to Dragonborn at the start of Chapter 21: The City Without Light. He is still able to use Lances and Reason magic, and also gains access to a Transform command that changes him to a 4-tile Earth Dragon unit. He gains a weakness to Anti-Dragon weaponry in this class. His personal ability will change to Dominance of Earth, which inflicts Def -3 and Res -3 on surrounding enemies at the start of each turn.
